Common uses
This medicine is a laxative used to clear the bowel before tests.
Before using
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM
YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that
you are taking. DO NOT TAKE OR USE other laxative products with this medicine.
ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking
ACE inhibitors (such as lisinopril or enalapril), angiotensin receptor blockers
(such as valsartan or losartan), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (such
as ibuprofen or naproxen), "water pills" (such as hydrochlorothiazide);
medicines affecting the heart rhythm (QT prolongation) such as cisapride,
pentamidine, certain antibiotics (quinolones such as moxifloxacin; or macrolides
such as erythromycin), psychiatric medicines (such as chlorpromazine,
amitriptyline, ziprasidone, or risperidone), quinidine, procainamide, sotalol,
or amiodarone; or medicines that may increase your seizure risk (such as
tramadol). DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist
approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including a
history of abnormal heartbeat, seizures, withdrawal from alcohol or
benzodiazepines (such as lorazepam or diazepam), electrolyte abnormalities,
syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH), adrenal
insufficiency, dehydration, ongoing inflammatory bowel disease, scleroderma,
uncontrolled thyroid disease, kidney disease, kidney or urinary stones,
allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. This medicine should be used with
caution if you have had a heart attack or heart surgery within the past 3
months. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have appendicitis or are
currently experiencing abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or other symptoms of
appendicitis; rectal bleeding; or if you have a history of gastrointestinal
disease (including retention, impaction, obstruction, severe ongoing
constipation, perforation, inflammation, toxic megacolon, or slowed movement),
severe kidney disease (including kidney failure), unstable angina, abdominal
swelling (ascites), uncontrolled electrolyte abnormalities (including abnormal
blood sodium, phosphate, potassium, or calcium levels), or congestive heart
failure. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns
about using this medicine. Use of this medicine in children under age 18 is not
recommended. Discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of giving this
medicine to your child.
Directions
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. TAKE
THIS MEDICINE on an empty stomach. DO NOT EAT ANY SOLID FOOD for 12 hours prior
to starting this medicine until your procedure is complete. Drink only clear
liquids. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C),
away from heat and light. Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30
degrees C) is permitted. NOTIFY YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you are
unable to finish taking this medicine prior to your test.
Cautions
DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are
allergic to any ingredient in this product. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE
unless directed by a doctor. Serious side effects may occur from excess dosage.
Do not repeat a course of this medicine within 7 days. This medicine will
produce a loose or watery stool in 3 to 6 hours or less. Undigested or partially
digested tablets may be seen in the watery diarrhea. If you are taking other
medicines, this medicine may interfere with them. Discuss any concerns you have
with your doctor. Talk with your doctor before taking this medicine if you are
on a low salt diet. This medicine contains sodium. Your blood pressure may be
affected if you take this medicine. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS
while you are taking this medicine. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE DIZZINESS. DO NOT
DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you
know how you react to this medicine. This medicine comes with desiccant packets
to keep your tablets dry. DO NOT EAT the desiccant packets. CAUTION IS ADVISED
WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to
the effects of this medicine. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT,
discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during
pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. IF YOU ARE
OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your
doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include abdominal
discomfort or bloating, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and headache. If they
continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. Diarrhea is an expected
effect of this medicine. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience
tingling of lips, tongue, fingers or toes; confusion; unusual tiredness or
weakness; excitability; muscle cramps; irregular heartbeat; or seizures. If you
notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or
pharmacist.
If you take too much
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or
emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include, confusion,
excitability, muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, or seizures.
